I sat on the hospital bed, swinging my feet gently as I waited for the doctor to finish the paperwork. The sterile smell of antiseptic filled the air, mingling with the faint scent of disinfectant. My foot, wrapped in a clean bandage, throbbed lightly. The doctor had just given me a tetanus shot since I didn’t have one on file. Luckily, the tines of the pitchfork hadn’t gone in all the way, so there was no significant damage.

The doctor, a middle-aged man with kind eyes and a calm demeanor, handed me my discharge papers. “You’re good to go, Miss Doss. Just keep an eye on that foot, and if you notice any signs of infection, come back immediately.”

“Thanks, doc,” I said, offering a grateful smile. “I appreciate it.”

He nodded and left the room, leaving me alone with my thoughts. Emily had already left, and I couldn’t shake the feeling of failure. I had gone through all this trouble, getting myself stabbed with a pitchfork, and I hadn’t gotten any useful information from Emily. But I wasn’t about to let this opportunity slip through my fingers.

I stood up, wincing slightly as I put weight on my injured foot. The throbbing pain was manageable, and I wasn’t going to let it slow me down. I took a deep breath and began hobbling out of the room, clutching the discharge papers in one hand.

The hospital corridor was a hive of activity, with nurses bustling about, doctors consulting with patients, and the occasional sound of a distant monitor beeping. I needed to find Richard Harlow’s room, and I needed to do it quickly.

I scanned the signs on the walls, looking for the direction to Room 256. A passing nurse gave me a curious glance, but I flashed her a quick smile and kept moving. The adrenaline from the night’s events still pumped through my veins, keeping me focused.

Finally, I found the right hallway and turned down it, my steps quickening despite the pain in my foot. Room 256 was at the end of the corridor, the door slightly ajar. I paused outside, taking a moment to steady myself and gather my thoughts.

Peeking inside, I saw Richard Harlow lying in the hospital bed, his shoulder heavily bandaged. He looked pale but alert, his eyes fixed on the television mounted on the wall. He seemed to be alone, giving me the perfect opportunity.

I took a deep breath and knocked lightly on the doorframe. Richard’s head turned, his expression wary as he saw me.

“Mind if I come in?” I asked, keeping my tone soft and unthreatening.

He hesitated for a moment before nodding. “Sure. Come on in.”

I stepped into the room, closing the door gently behind me. “How are you feeling?”

Richard sighed, shifting slightly in the bed. “I’ve been better. But I’ll live.”

I pulled up a chair and sat down beside the bed, my eyes never leaving his. “I’m glad to hear that. I wanted to talk to you about what happened last night.”

“Do I know you?” he asked, trying to place my face, making me wonder if he got a good look at me last night.
